Typical hexagonal crystals, both isolated and in aggregates, most of which appear as complex structures made up of smaller crystals clumped together. Cystine crystals are always pathologic since they are associated with cystinuria, an (autosomic recessive) inherited condition which is characterized by an impaired absorption of the aminoacid cystine by the proximal renal tubules. Cystine crystals are found in acid urine and are insoluble up to a pH of 7.4.
