An egg of Schistosoma hematobium with the typical terminal spike. The egg shown in the image is characterised by a large cleft through which the miracidium (= the larva of the parasite) has left the egg. The search of the eggs in the urinary sediment is the simplest, fastest, most inexpensive and most widely used method to diagnose this parasitic infection.
