Dark finely granular casts (arrows) and renal tubular epithelial cells (RTEC) (circle) found in the urine of a 58-year old man, who developed acute kidney injury after a septic shock. The presence of RTEC in the urine indicates a very severe damage of the tubular epithelium i.e., the detachment of the cells from the tubular basement membrane.
