Superficial transitional cells of different size and shape (mostly roundish and a few ovoidal). These cells differ from the squamous epithelial cells, also present in the image, which are much larger and with irregular shape. Superficial transitional cells indicate a damage of the superficial layers of the uroepithelium as can occur in urinary tract infection, urological disorders, and in patients with bladder catheter or ureteric stent.
