Acanthocytes (also known as “G1 cells”), i.e. doughnut-shaped dysmorphic RBC with one or more vesicle-like protrusions of different size and shape (arrows). Due to their peculiar morphology, acanthocytes can be identified easily and with much less subjectivity than other dysmorphic RBC. Several studies have demonstrated that the finding of >=5% of acanthocytes is highly suggestive of a glomerular origin of haematuria.
